Nationwide
is the world's largest building society as well as the second largest savings
provider and a top-three provider of mortgages in the UK. It is also a major
provider of current accounts, credit cards and personal loans. Nationwide has
around 15 million members.
Since the credit crunch began in 2007,
Nationwide has remained profitable against a very difficult economic
environment. In the half year ending September 2011 Nationwide made a strong
underlying profit of £172 million - up 17% from the previous year. Its strong
financial performance and prudent business model means that Nationwide is
included in Global Financial magazine's Top 50 Safest Banks in the
World.
Nationwide has around 700 branches and customers can manage their
finances in branch, on the telephone, internet and post. The Society has around
16,000 employees. Nationwide's head office is in Swindon with administration
centres based in Northampton, Bournemouth and Dunfermline. The society also has
a number of call centres across the UK.
Based in Swindon, Nationwide has
a vibrant, 200 strong Analyst Community focused on providing a platform for
nurturing professional growth. One of their key focuses is to develop this
community through interactions with the rest of the industry, creating
connections, learning from companies and sharing experiences. Nationwide has
found the IIBA a valuable resource to aid in development and is very pleased to
host this South West Chapter IIBA event.

We are
pleased to welcome 2 speakers to present to you for this event:
Speakers
Richard
Williams (Nationwide) Requirements Manager, who
will be talking about Business Process Modelling and how it affects requirements
gathering.
Business Process Modelling and how
it affects requirements gathering
In this
presentation, Richard will explore how accurately modelling business processes
can be used to effectively discover requirements. He will show how starting
with the business activities, an accurate Business Process Model can then be
created. From this, how effective modelling techniques can be used to
apparently "conjur up" requirements that might otherwise not have been
discovered.
In his earlier years, Richard ran a successful health
business which took him to various parts of the world. Having studied
Mathematics with the Open University, he refocused his career via the Nationwide
IT Trainee Scheme and progressed into the Analyst role, whilst gaining several
ISEB qualifications. He now draws on this experience in his current role as a
Requirements Manager at Nationwide.
Dr
Emma Langman (Progression Partnership), who will
be looking at both the theory and practice of building momentum for
organisational change followed by a brief overview of common barriers and
challenges, and then will examine the ways in which the BA can add particular
value.

By the end of this session, group participants
should feel even more confident about articulating their role in change, and
demonstrating how the skills of a Business Analyst can help to drive the change
forward and ensure that it is embedded for the long-term. Expect this session
to include some high-level concepts and theory, case study examples - and as
much conversation within the group as we can squeeze into the time
available!
A Visiting Fellow at the University of Bristol's Centre for
Systems Learning and Leadership, Emma is also a director and 'Change Magician'
at Progression Partnership. She specialises in personal and organisational
change, and draws her inspiration from Systems Thinking, including
author-practicioners such as W Edwards Deming, Stafford Beer, Margaret Wheatley,
Donella Meadows, Russell Ackoff and Fritjof Capra. Having started her
career as a Civil Engineer, Emma enjoys both the logic of using processes and
data to drive change; as well as valuing the importance of human pyschology and
relationships.
Emma's recent projects span a number of sectors, including
local government (Revenues, Benefits, Adult Social Care, Children's Services),
Health, Engineering, Social Enterprise, Media and
Retail.
